A single mother with a 5-year-old child is experiencing severe financial and mental hardship due to an ongoing legal fight to keep her home. She purchased 20 acres of land jointly with a longtime friend years ago, and she has worked tirelessly since then to construct an off-grid cabin to live in. She has been living there with her young child for over 6 years, while her friend was merely a financial contributor. Since the housing market skyrocketed, her co-owner filed suit against her, demanding more than $350,000 upfront to be bought out of the property — a case that went to trial. She represented herself pro se for two years before retaining legal counsel, and has now exhausted significant personal resources in her defense. Her current attorney has advised that an appeal is warranted, and she has 30 days to appeal the decision, or she loses everything--and is left in severe legal debt. She is also facing the possibility of having to move if she can’t secure the funds to appeal, which is adding to the financial and mental toll. In the meantime, she is struggling to keep up with basic monthly expenses and essential household needs. She has expressed that literally anything would help. She is resourceful, resilient, and doing everything within her power to protect her home and provide stability for her child, but she is stretched far beyond her capacity at this time, and the mental toll is exhausting.
