A single mom is desperately trying to work her way out of poverty
This single mother of a 9-year-old daughter works full-time and attends school full-time for her Bachelor's in Social Work. She has been trying very hard to stay above water over the years while she puts herself through school. However, she's had a few changes come up that have been making it very difficult for her to overcome the mounting bills.
She works full-time and she worked a lot of overtime this past year, so when she had her annual review for her income-based housing, they increased her rent by $400/mo. She is now working less hours in an attempt to bring the rent back down, as her overtime is never guaranteed. In addition, she is getting wisdom teeth removed that have become infected in October, and will have to pay $660 out of pocket. Bonner Partners in Care pledged $500, and she said her dad may be able to help with the rest, so she has that covered. But, she just recently injured herself at work, and while she will be receiving workers’ comp, it will not completely cover her wages. She also makes too much to qualify for food stamps and/or Medicaid. She has lost both her own health insurance and her daughter's.
She is in the awkward middle, where she is trying her best to progress out of poverty, and therefore she is losing her benefits, but she still doesn't make enough money to sustainably live with all of her bills. She is desperately trying to figure out how to both continue to work, have insurance for her and her daughter, go to school and work her way out of poverty, but continue to pay her bills.
She owes $876 in rent for October, but she can come up with about half on her own. She broke down on the phone crying because she has genuinely been trying to improve her situation, but it never feels like enough. Any help for her and her daughter is much appreciated.
